Tiny Home Fire Safety Tips
As we head into the fall and winter seasons approach, many individuals considering making the transition to off-grid living are now planning a spring build of a tiny home. One of the most important aspects for any abode, but in particular for tiny homes, is the issue of fire safety. Given the cozy nature of your new living quarters, you’ll want to make sure you have precautions in place, should an internal fire spark. Check out a few of our top tips to consider below!
Always have an escape route
The number one thing you want to remember when it comes to fire safety and your new home is the ability to get out quickly. Right from the design phase, have fail-safes built into your structure. Consider things like:
- How many people will be living in the house, along with any pets. How much space do you need to accommodate an emergency evacuation for everyone?
- If you’re opting for the popular ‘loft bed’ option, consider how you will be able to escape should a kitchen fire start below.
- How easy will it be to navigate your space in a panicked space? Having too much in your area can make it difficult to leave with the necessary speed in a worse case scenario
- How and where will you store your “must have” items for an emergency? Make sure they are ready to go and easily accessible
Use the right kind of materials
In the event of a fire, having your structure stand its ground as long as possible. Heat resistant materials like fire-caulking, fire resistant insulation, and having proper ventilation in place.
Consider going electric
Propane stoves or BBQs seem like an easy solution for your cooking needs, as with any gas outfit, they do carry a certain level of risk. If opting to use induction plate or toaster oven, you will have a more controlled environment. The trade-off, however, is a larger energy spend.
Have a reliable suppression system in place
It’s always a good idea to have a fire extinguisher close by, but in the event of a night time fire, there’s always the chance you won’t be able to reach one in time. Your best bet is to have a passive system in place that’s able to step in at the most important moment. The HAVEN Fire Suppression system (now in stock!) does just that, activating in the presence of extreme heat to extinguish flames and give you and your loved ones additional time to get to safety. The lifespan of the unit is approximately five years, and the dry-chem agent used will not cause substantial damage to your home, giving you increased peace of mind.
